amtgard v9

frequently asked questions

THIS INFORMATION WILL BE UPDATED SOON TO REFLECT PHASE 2 OF DEVELOPMENT (2021/2022).

On this page we will try to answer the most common and frequently asked questions that we have received over the course of development. Please use your search function to browse for specific questions. If you cannot find what you are looking for, you can contact the V9 Team directly through v9@amtgard.com or by messaging the Amtgard V9 Facebook Page.

Questions and answers are listed below in no particular order.

Q: WHAT'S UP WITH THE "PRE-ALPHA PLAYTEST RULES"?

The "Pre-Alpha Playtest Rules" video was an April Fools joke released on April 1st, 2021 by the Amtgard V9 Development Team. It's contents were entirely scripted for laughs and do not reflect the actual direction or decisions of the V9 process. Any future similarities are entirely coincidental.

For clarity, this video is fake. There are no "Pre-Alpha Playtest Rules".

Q: HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? WILL ALL KINGDOMS AND/OR RULES REPS BE INVOLVED?

To get involved, your first step is to complete the surveys found here and apply for the focus groups.

Focus groups are open discussed forums and will be used as sounding boards, testing grounds, and think tanks for the development process. Participation and representation is purely at the discretion of the core V9 team. When selecting individuals for participation, our primary factors are be diversity, knowledge, and experience.

Applications for each focus group topic can be found at the end of it’s respective survey. Members are generally selected ~1 month after the survey was initially released.

When it comes to overall Kingdom representation, every Rules Representative (RR) of Amtgard has been invited to join the V9 development process in an advisory role beneath the core V9 team. The Rules Rep Organizer (RRO) sits on the core team itself and the individual RRs are engaged directly through their own focus group channel where they can provide the opinions and insight of their own Kingdom for consideration. You can always talk to your Rules Representative so they can interact with us on your behalf. (Check the list here to see if your Kingdom’s Rules Rep has joined V9.)

Lastly, the core V9 Team will be expanding as development progresses. We will be looking to promote individuals within the focus groups who show passion, drive, and other key qualities that we feel would be a boon to the development process.

Q: CAN I SUBMIT /SHARE IDEAS WITH YOU?

If you would like to submit homebrew documents, ideas, or concepts for the V9 Team to reference and explore, without any strings attached, then we will be more than happy to add your work to our growing collection of resources. If we end up using any of your ideas, you will be given a contributor credit in the final rulebook.

Due to the nature of the project, we cannot make any promises to use your ideas “exactly as written”, nor can we grant any creative control over their inclusion in the Amtgard V9 project.

If you would like to have open conversations or spitball ideas, we highly recommend applying for the various focus groups. If accepted, you will be able to freely chat with other enthusiastic players, as well as the V9 Team themselves, in a closed think-tank about whatever topic you applied for. See “Q: How Can I Get Involved?” for more information on focus groups.

Q: IS THE V9 DEVELOPMENT DISCORD OPEN TO THE PUBLIC?

Unfortunately the V9 Discord server is not a public server.

If you are simply looking for a point of contact with the V9 team, you can always ask us questions on the Amtgard V9 Facebook Page or through v9@amtgard.com

In addition, we have expanded our amtgard.com presence to include a number of extra information pages, such as Team Bios, FAQs, and a section for Monthly Updates to the public. It is our hope that this information can help answer the majority of questions that you might have about the project and it’s future.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR X IN V9?

The development process for V9 is data-driven. If, over the course of our data-gathering, we see significant support for something to change, we will investigate further. At the end of the day, if there’s something you want to see in V9, make sure you express it in the relevant surveys, apply for the respective focus groups, and let your Rules Rep know.

Q: THE SURVEY QUESTIONS ARE VERY BROAD. CAN YOU BE MORE SPECIFIC?

Due to the infinite potential of Amtgard, we simply cannot include every possible option in our surveys so we’ve provided a number of instances for open response where we hope you would be willing to share your on-topic ideas with us. In addition, every survey ends with “Is there anything else you would like to add?” — If you have any lingering thoughts at the end of the survey, enter it all there and we will see it.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE CODE OF CONDUCT?

The Amtgard V9 Team only handles the “Game” portion of the rules. Any additions or changes to the Code of Conduct would have to go through its own vote at the IKCoM.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR KNIGHTHOOD, PARAGONS, ORDERS, AND AWARD STANDARDIZATION?

The Amtgard V9 Team only handles in “Game” portion of the rules. Any additions or changes to Award Standardization would have to go through its own vote at the IKCoM., and everything else is covered by individual Kingdom Corporas.

The only minor exception is the Paragon awards, which we will be working in tandem with the Award Standardization team to determine how best to implement them in the new edition of the game.

Q: HOW DO YOU INTEND TO ADDRESS AMTGARD'S SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ISSUES?

The Amtgard V9 Team only handles the “Game” portion of the rules. Social and cultural issues are the responsibility of the community as a whole and cannot be realistically mandated by the written rules for gameplay itself. That said, if there are any aspects of the game rules that appear to contribute to social or cultural problems, let us know in the respective survey and we will be sure to investigate and take appropriate steps to mitigate it.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR DIVERSITY? WHY DO YOUR SURVEYS ASK ABOUT GENDER AND ETHNICITY?

Amtgard as a game and as a community strives to be welcoming to all players, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, age, physical or mental ability, or religious affiliation.

We strive to fill our focus groups with a fair representation of players from a variety of genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, and experiences. As development progresses, we will seek to expand the core V9 Team by promoting individuals within the focus groups who show passion, drive, cooperation, and other key qualities that would be a boon to the development process.

In addition, each of our surveys allows respondents to opt-in to a contact list of players who may be individually approached for a 1-on-1 conversation with our Diversity and Accessibility Team to privately discuss the level of representation of their gender identity and/or cultural heritage within the Amtgard Rules of Play. Players who wish to engage with us this way will be able to decide their preferred method of interaction (text, voice, etc..) at the time they are contacted.

It is our hope that we can incorporate new and welcoming concepts into the game as well as increase the representation of marginalized communities while still retaining the core feel of the game as it is today.

Q: WHERE CAN I GO TO TALK ABOUT DISABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY IN AMTGARD V9?

Amtgard as a game and as a community strives to be welcoming to all players, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, age, physical or mental ability, or religious affiliation.

We strive to fill our focus groups with a fair representation of players who suffer from disabilities or difficulties that alter the way they experience the game. As development progresses, we will seek to expand the core V9 Team by promoting individuals within the focus groups who show passion, drive, cooperation, and other key qualities that would be a boon to the development process.

See “Q: How Can I Get Involved?” for more information on focus groups.

Each of our surveys will allow respondents to opt-in to a contact list of players who may be individually approached for a 1-on-1 conversation with our Diversity and Accessibility Team to privately discuss physical and/or mental accessibility in Amtgard. Players who wish to engage with us will be able to decide their preferred method of interaction (text, voice, etc..) at the time they are contacted.

Q: HOW LONG WILL THE SURVEYS BE OPEN FOR?

The surveys will remain open for responses even after the next ones become available. However, once we pass our target numbers (currently 500 responses per survey), we may begin to draw preliminary conclusions from the data even as new responses come in.

We will continue to assess all new responses, but in order to meet our overall release deadline we may need to set some gears in motion based on what is available at the time we decide to do so (provided we have at least 500 responses on the topic in question).

Our current plan is to close all surveys by ~June 2021 at the absolute latest so that we can prepare a report and submit an updated game plan to the IKCoM, as well as proceed to the next phase of development.

Rest assured, we will cross-reference all our decisions with the final data before presenting our alpha build to the IKCoM.

Q: WHAT IS THE MARGIN OF ERROR FOR YOUR SURVEYS?

Our margin of error is 4%. This was calculated with a minimum sample size of 500 respondents, a population of 4500, and a 95% confidence level.

We are also aware of participation bias and a number of other factors that may affect the overall results, however with limited resources and zero budget, the best we can do at this time is be cognizant of the potential biases in the data and work to mitigate them as best as possible with the tools at our disposal.

Q: REGARDING RUMOURS, THEORIES, AND "LEAKED" INFORMATION

It is our goal to remain as transparent as we can be during the V9 development process. With the massive community outreach we are undertaking via focus groups, there will no doubt be tons of information being passed around about what’s going to happen in V9.

While we wish we could control the rumor-mill and only circulate 100% true information, it is likely that the majority of information being passed around will be hearsay, theory-crafting, or the byproducts of a focus group brainstorming session.

As such, unless the information has been presented by a branded V9 account such as this website, v9@amtgard.com, or the Amtgard V9 facebook page, we highly recommend treating everything you hear as wishful theories at best, or complete fabrications at worst.

Further, even information provided directly by the Amtgard V9 Team is subject to change. Research and development requires a lot of trial and error. An idea that may be “THE solution” one day can be thrown in the trash the next, and taken back out the day after.

If you ever want to know if a piece of V9 information is accurate or not, please reach out us through v9@amtgard.com or via the Amtgard V9 Facebook Page.
