amtgard v9

frequently asked questions

THIS INFORMATION HAS BEEN UPDATED TO REFLECT PHASE 2 OF DEVELOPMENT (2021/2022).

On this page we will try to answer the most common and frequently asked questions that we have received over the course of development. Please use your search function to browse for specific questions. If you cannot find what you are looking for, you can contact the V9 Team directly through v9@amtgard.com or by messaging the Amtgard V9 Facebook Page.

Questions and answers are listed below in no particular order.

Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PLAYTEST AND EXPERIMENT?

The Amtgard V9 Team will be putting out two types of trials during our development process: Playtests and Experiments.

A playtest is a full test of the Amtgard V9 Rules in their entirety. At the time of writing, there are no active V9 Playtests.

An experiment is a stress test or information-gathering exercise designed to inform future development decisions. Experiments take place within the Version 8 Ruleset and the goals may be less obvious on first glance. Most changes made in an experiment are done to encourage a behaviour we are trying to observe rather than to judge the specific changes themselves. At the time of writing, the Amtgard V9 Field Research Project is conducting a number of experiments with help the of volunteer parks and their assigned Research Ambassadors.

If you have participated in any playtest or experiment and have questions, please connect with your Research Ambassador, Kingdom Rules Rep, or contact us directly using the methods at the top of this page.

Q: WHAT IS AMTGARD V9?

Amtgard V9 is the next major edition of the Amtgard Rules of Play. New editions of Amtgard are released roughly every 10 years and are able to make large-scale changes that would not be possible in a typical update.

Amtgard V9 has the potential to add, remove, or change almost anything game-related in the Rules of Play, including but not limited to: game mechanics, classes, spells & abilities, leveling, magic items, battlegame rules, etc.

The developers of Amtgard V9 want to ensure that the game we are playing after the update still feels like Amtgard, which is why they are investing so much time and effort into Research and Development.

Q: I HEARD... (RUMORS, THEORIES, & "LEAKED" INFORMATION)

TLDR: Take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

It is our goal to remain as transparent as we can be during the V9 development process. With the massive community outreach we are undertaking via the focus groups and field research program, there will no doubt be tons of information being passed around about what’s going to happen in V9.

While we wish we could control the rumor-mill and only circulate 100% true information, it is likely that the majority of information being passed around will be hearsay, theory-crafting, or the byproducts of a friendly brainstorming sessions.

As such, unless the information has been presented by a branded V9 account such as this website, v9@amtgard.com, or the Amtgard V9 facebook page, we highly recommend treating everything you hear as wishful theories at best, or complete fabrications at worst.

Even information provided directly by the Amtgard V9 Team is subject to change. Research and development requires a lot of trial and error. An idea that may be “THE solution” one day can be thrown in the trash the next, and taken back out the day after.

If you ever want to know if a piece of V9 information is accurate or not, please reach out us through v9@amtgard.com or via the Amtgard V9 Facebook Page.

Q: WHO MAKES THE FINAL DECISION ABOUT WHAT GOES INTO V9?

TLDR: The core V9 Team members.

The core members of the Amtgard V9 Development Team are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of the project. As such, they will be making all final decisions when it comes to the direction and content of Amtgard V9.

With that in mind, it is the intention of the team to be data-driven and engage with the populous as much as possible to ensure that their decisions reflect the collective aspirations of our diverse player-base, both old, new, and those who have yet to join.

To support this goal, the core team has enlisted an extended development team which includes the Kingdom Rules Reps, who act as advisors on behalf of their kingdom, as well as all members of the focus group and field research programs. These individuals are closely connected to the project but primarily serve to stimulate idea generation, provide diverse perspectives, and to give feedback on rough concepts. The extended development team has no official vote or authority in the final decisions about V9, however their input will no doubt influence the choices made by the core team.

Lastly, the Inter-Kingdom Circle of Monarchs will act as a final check-and-balance. The IKCOM must vote in favor of the final V9 ruleset before it is official adopted. That said, they cannot directly make changes themselves. They can only vote it down and provide feedback for the V9 Team to use in their revisions.

Q: WHAT IS THE "FIELD RESEARCH PROGRAM"?

The goal of the Field Research Program is to conduct on-field research experiments and early playtests to support the on-going development of the next edition of Amtgard. In order to apply, the population of a park as a whole must be willing to participate in this program. Each park in accepted into the program will have 1-3 Research Ambassadors.

Research Ambassadors are the primary point-of-contact between the Amtgard V9 Team and their park. They are responsible for ensuring the experiments are executed properly, as well as providing comprehensive feedback for each one.

The Field Research Program is an on-going initiative. If your park is currently restricted by the COVID-19 pandemic, you can still apply and participate once your situation has improved. All tests will remain available to you. If you have questions regarding the pandemic and COVID-19, please contact us directly.

Q: WHAT ARE THE "FOCUS GROUPS"?

The Focus groups are an internal group of individuals chosen from across all Kingdoms to be used as sounding boards, testing grounds, and think tanks for the development process, in addition to the data provided by surveys and input from Rules Representatives. Applications to join were accepted in Phase 1 (2020-2021) and all members have since been invited. When selecting individuals for participation, our primary factors will be diversity, knowledge, and experience. Involvement in the V9 project is privilege granted at the discretion of the core V9 team and disruptive members will be removed as necessary.
